Gloria Steinem & Meghan Markle Cold-Called Voters Ahead of Election

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, cold-called voters living in the United States to encourage them to vote in the forthcoming November presidential election, Steinem recently revealed in an interview with reporter Zuri Hall from Access Hollywood.

In late August, the duo met in-person to discuss politics, women's empowerment, and more for a video published via MAKERS Women. Of her impression of the duchess (whom she affectionately calls "Meg"), Steinem said, "She is such an inspiration to me, because she has a kind of stereotype hanging over her head, which is princess. … The whole idea of princess is a problem. We had a whole revolution to get rid of royalty."

Steinem additionally revealed that the two teamed up to cold-call voters in attempt to encourage people to vote.

"Meg is herself, smart, authentic, funny, political. She came home to vote," she said. "And the first thing we did and why she came to see me was we sat at the dining room table here—where I am right now—and cold-called voters. And said, 'Hello, I'm Meg,' and, 'Hello, I'm Gloria,' and, 'Are you going to vote?' That was her initiative."

During their conversation last month, Meghan reflected on what it means to see Kamala Harris be the vice presidential nominee for the Democratic ticket.

"I'm so excited to see that kind of representation. You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity," said Meghan. "As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we're starting to break through in a different way."
