Prince George, the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William Appear in Historical Portrait

Smiling for the camera in Buckingham Palace’s Throne Room alongside his great-grandmother, grandfather, and father, it would have felt like any other family picture for Prince George. But a new image released today featuring the six-year-old alongside three generations of family is especially significant: The portrait contains the current monarch and the first, second, and third in line to the throne.

The queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William stood alongside the young heir for their second official group photo together, taken by photographer Ronald Machkechnie on December 18 “to mark the start of a new decade,” says a Palace spokesperson.

Her Majesty is closest to the camera in the image, wearing a white dress accessorized by dresser Angela Kelly with a sapphire and diamond broach, and one of her iconic Launer handbags. The Prince of Wales and William are both smart in blue suits, while George paired his crisp white Amaia Kids shirt with tartan pants by Trotters.

George has certainly grown since the last time the four posed for a portrait. In April 2016, Buckingham Palace released an image taken in the same room by Machkechnie to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. It was later used for special commemorative stamps released by the British Royal Mail.
